Reserve ranger: Charity Mae ‘Chai’ Mendoza Apale
Country: Philippines
Partner organisation: Philippine Reef and Rainforest Conservation Foundation Inc. (PRRFCI)
Ranger Chai became WLT’s second female Keeper of the Wild in November 2012. She worked in Danjugan Island Marine Reserve and Sanctuaries (DIMRS), off the coast of Negros Island in the Philippines.
For a year Chai coordinated PRRFCI’s conservation programme which included protecting the reserve from poachers and illegal fishing activities, coordinating research studies and developing community activities including mangrove tree planting and coastal clean-up events.
Chai said: "The best aspect of working in the reserve was doing the things I’m passionate about. Danjugan Sanctuary is one of the best places for someone who is into conservation efforts, dealing with the community and using environmental education to raise awareness."
Chai is no longer a WLT Keeper of the Wild.
