Reserve ranger: Rene Cartagena
Country: Bolivia
Partner organisation: Asociación Armonía

Rene Cartagena was born in the Tacana indigenous village of Tumupasa located where the Amazon jungle reaches the Beni tropical savannas. He grew up in the jungle town of Rurrenabaque. He took a job protecting a rainforest lodge on Rio Beni, and found he enjoyed working in nature interpretation and protection. Rene was keen to help protect the Barba Azul Nature Reserve in the tropical savannas of Beni with his partner Rosario.

Rene’s work includes patrolling the borders of the reserve, removing invading cattle, maintaining firebreaks and fences, clearing trails and runways, checking camera-traps and assisting tourists and researchers on the Barba Azul Nature Reserve.

Rene says: “It is important to me to be in a natural, peaceful place working to provide for my family while helping to protect threatened species.”
