Books for Conservation - Helping NGOs obtain natural history reference books

Staging site

FPWC receives Books for Conservation

Do you belong to a non-government conservation organisation (NGO) in a country where it is difficult to obtain important reference material? If you do, the World Land Trust’s ‘Books for Conservation’ Programme may be able to help.

The World Land Trust has a wide stock of used and slightly damaged natural history books, including field guides, text books and other books related to natural history and the environment. These are available free of charge.

Books for Conservation

A partnership between the World Land Trust and NHBS - Everything for wildlife, science & environment

Background to the Programme

The Books for Conservation programme is an exciting partnership between the World Land Trust and the Natural History Book Service (NHBS). From simple beginnings in 2002 when the NHBS donated books surplus to their requirements to the WLT this programme has developed into an important resource for struggling NGOs throughout the world.

In order to gauge the level of interest this programme could expect to attract, the WLT placed an announcement on the IUCN’s Species Survival Commission website inviting NGOs and educational institutions involved in conservation in developing countries to make contact if they were lacking natural history reference material needed for their work. This resulted in scores of enquiries and applications for books from around the globe. It was obvious that WLT could play a vital role in facilitating the distribution of reference books to the organisations that needed them most.

How the Programme works

  • The WLT regularly receives donations of used and slightly damaged books from the NHBS;
  • These books are added to the Books for Conservation catalogue;
  • When the WLT receives an application the NGO is evaluated to check their eligibility to receive books;
  • The organisation must also have a means of personally couriering the books to their intended destination which will be evaluated by WLT;
  • The NGO will then be sent the current book catalogue;
  • Once the organisation has selected their books, their collection will be organised.

Programme Success

Already we have been able to assist most of our programme partners with vital reference books as well as other organisations as widely scattered as Brazil, Bolivia, China, Ecuador, Ghana, India, Mauritius, Mozambique and Turkey, with each consignment averaging a commercial value of around US$200.

“Finding foreign scientific literature is really a problem in the countries of the former USSR, therefore the books we got from you are indeed of large importance for rising level of knowledge as well as for running several current projects.”

Dr. Pavel Tomkovich
Working Group on Waders, Moscow
